Anti Russian Rhetoric - Paranoia or...?

There is today a significant anti Russian rhetoric sweeping through eastern Europe. This is the result of a well orchestrated political & media narrative, orchestrated in great part by the U.S. creating and constantly feeding the narrative of an imminent Russian invasion. The sanctions that have subsequently been applied to the Russian economy by the U.S. has brought greater political and economic harm more to countries such as Latvia, that previously were wholly dependent on positive econimc and political ties with Russia. As an employer of Latvians and other eastern Europeans including some Russians, I find that there is a mixed regard for relations with Russia. However, the few Latvians I am familiar with have rather stronger anti Russian opinions and consequently prefer that Latvia is under the protectorate of NATO & the EU rather than the oppressive influences of Russia. Perhaps my question/post is rather boring and I apologise in advance if I have sent you to sleep. But I am interested in political developments within the European Union and it interests me to know better the views and opinions of everyday Latvians "on the ground" who will most be affected by the decisions of their MEPs and national politicians. Thank you for your time and consideration of my post. John.

Considering the history I'd be suspect of Russia also.
1991 I believe Latvia got independence again- stuff all.
Personally I'd distance myself from America also though I suppose the baltics need to be seen with big back up.
It is interesting and hard to understand for me being Australian but I've read on the subject quite alot and Russia/ussr did some dodgy stuff.

I agree. But if Russia is doing some "dodgy stuff" then the US is doing some real shit! Question is with all the fanfare and talk of US supporting Europe through NATO and the EU, who send gas to Latvia? Texas

Well, if we take the Anti Russian Rhetoric up (again!), then we need to consider just 3 things:

- Russia is the biggest country in the world by its territory - and it's not a coincidence;

- Russia develops the nuclear weapons on its own - one of the rare things which are developed exclusively in Russia - and it's not a coincidence;

- Russia owns the biggest reserve of internal fossils which are NECESSARY for the human kind - incl. fresh water, oil, gas, charcoal etc. - and this is the *primary* interest of US and EU, and it always was.

So Latvia, as many other countries, is the neighbor of the biggest country of the world with the biggest reserve of human resources. The neighbor. Then why Latvia tends to be closer with US which is on the opposite side of the world? NATO? EU? The answer is simple: because of political corruption.

When USSR was broken, the official power in Latvia was gained by so called "Family of 100" mafia. Their names and surnames are disputed in media since then all the time. No new faces in politics in 27 years of "independence", no young faces. The political power all belongs to the same corrupted "family" and its "relatives". Yes, Latvia is the 3rd world country.

And this "family" is fully "bought/purchased" by the US government and EU institutions (as soon as EU is bought by US, too). So when we talk why Latvia goes against its biggest and richest neighbor, it's not what the Latvian people want, it's what the Latvian corrupted politicians want. The answer is simple: money. And even not such big money you could imagine, 'cause Latvia is small, and the corrupted group of politicians is small, too.

So, there's no war, no protests - because there are not so many people who'd like to risk their lives for corruption. Actually most of people don't even concentrate on sanctions. Most people of Latvia are trying to survive each day and thinking about where to earn more money and how to shag the government not paying taxes.

Excellent commentary. I suspected as much. But preferred to read it from someone with a better insight. It's a shame because the only people that suffer the politicians corruption are the average Latvian man and woman. While their puppet politicians repeat the same old bullshit anti Russian rhetoric, does the US send supplies to the Latvian people after sanctions are applied to their largest economic neighbour? To be fair, this anti Russian narrative is not only coming from Latvia but also from practically all EU nations. So, what does that tell us? That all EU governments are taking large cash filled envelopes at the end of each month? Madness.

Not just Latvian... I'd suppose all people on Earth.

The answer is no. US sends just their military forces to this land. We only could suppose that this army is build against the local inhabitants,so they are not up to any protest... not someone outside of the border. It's not serious to see these old tanks and outdated military powers to "say something" against Russia.

Exactly. I believe this all is done just because of big printed paper.
