Better use social transport here.

We have:

a) Very bad roads
b) Very high "extremal" traffic in Riga
c) 50/50 of uneducated young drivers/women which are blind on the road

If you still bring the car, insure it for the whole price.

Do cars in Latvia need a yearly safety check or anything?

There is a lot of moments if you bring your car to Latvia.

It's allowed to use your car up to 3 months with no additional registration and costs. You must have all original technical passports and your owner's certificate.

If you use your car for a longer time than 3 months, you should temporarily or constantly register it in Latvia. There are a lot of various taxes and fees depending on the car's production year, the volume of the engine, car's weight. If the car needs a yearly safety check, you could also perform it in Latvia, but only if the car is registered in Latvia.

Depending on the country you're coming from, registration fees vary. I think you could count on at least 200 Lats (i.e. about EUR 300) for registration of the car in Latvia.

There are a lot of used and refurbished cars around on sale. I'm afraid only, the sellers do not speak English well and seeing you're a foreigner, would offer you much higher rates.

If you need a car just temporarily, you could buy one of those used garbage of course... for about 2-3-4 thousands EURos, depends on the model and production year... anyway, nobody will give you warranties on that car.

I think you may visit a place called "Rumbula", it's on the border of Riga if you drive to the Eastern Latvia. There you may find huge amount of second-hand cars.

Regarding new cars... yes, in Latvia now there is a financial crisis, and many banks are selling quite new cars instead of receiving the loan's fee, for quite moderate prices. But I guess such chance won't live for a long time

NEVER buy a car on "Rumbula". Yes there is quite a big choice, but almost all cars are after car crash there, just renovated. They are coming from Gemany, Lithuania... If you take a look at how many miles it has, it's always a "reverted" value.

I would recommend to look for a service, which doesn't just sell cars, but also provides their post-support, gives some warranties. Car is a serious tool to run, specially on awful Latvian roads.

They are not full of something... but you will meet holes sometimes in very unexpected places.
Also, we have not so impressive signs system I must say.

forget to add one thing, be careful and don't forget the stereo inside your car in Latvia, otherwise it will be stolen
